A syllable in the Modern Chinese is composed of an initial, a final and a tone. The initial is a consonant that begins a syllable , and the final is the part that follows it.There are altogether 21 initials and 38 finals in the modern Chinese. Syllables of the modern Chinese common speech have four basic tones to distinguish their meanings. For example,in ba1 , b is the initial, a is the final , and the syllable is in the first tone,Some known as zero initial syllables, which contain no initials but only finals ,such as a1.
